Margaritaville Margarita MixA History on the Rocks
You don’t need to be a pilot to get there. Palm trees provide the camouflage. Ocean breezes bring seaplanes and sailboats, tourists and travelers. Passports are not required when you go to Margaritaville.
Mott’s slipped away to Margaritaville in December 2000, when the company launched Margaritaville Margarita Mix, named after Jimmy Buffet’s iconic 1977 song. Produced under license from Buffet and his Margaritaville Holdings, the brand gave consumers a chance to stop salting the winter roads and to start salting their chilled glasses.
The following spring, Margaritaville made a big splash in Miami, Florida, when the brand unleashed Big Rita, the world’s largest margarita. At 7,039 gallons, Big Rita is not just the world’s largest margarita, it’s also the largest cocktail ever, using 5,290 gallons of Margaritaville Margarita Mix and 1,321 gallons of tequila. Rose’s Triple Sec made up the difference. Big Rita weighed in at 32 tons, garnering her an entry in the Guiness Book of World Records.
Today, Margaritaville Margarita Mix continues under the management of Plano, Texas-based Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages, the largest non-cola soft drink enterprise in North America and the largest beverage subsidiary of London-based Cadbury Schweppes plc.
